James Lyerly remembers covering his eyes during the detonation of a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific. Lyerly said that the blast was so bright he could see the bones in his hands. Lylers served aboard the USS Walton in 1956 during Operation Redwing. In that flash Lylerly's life was changed forever. Lylerly became deftly sick after exposure to bomb radiation. Ever since Lylerly has fought a variety of health problems. In and out of hosptials he believes his exposure to radiation has not only destroyed his life but has left marks on his family for generations to come. Lylerly and the lives of his family stand as a testament to the darker side of the atomic age. |
