The last hurricane to strike the Virginia Peninsula hit in August of 1933 wreaking havoc that only a few old timers remember. Threatened many times before residents prepared in disbelief that a storm could strike the area. All hopes disappeared when hurricane force winds struck the area on Sept 18, 2000 finding many ill prepared to deal with the effects of a major storm.
Here, just the fringe of Hurricane Isabel dots the morning sky as Bobby Kellum (left) and his son Russell Kellum both of Guinea, Virginia waste no time in moving their workboat into a small creek for shelter from the approaching hurricane.
