Since the Vietnam War Era, the Roanoke refugee and Immigration Services has placed refugees in a barrack-looking apartment complex called Terrace Apartments. The most recent refugees to arrive at Terrace are Somali-Bantu. Once in America, the Bantu not only learn to adapt to their new surroundings at Terrace, but must also adjust to life in American schools and American culture. Khamisey Mohammed gazes out over the Terrace Apartments during her spring break.
