Somali Bantu refugee Batula Shongolo sits in her family's home at the Terrace Apartments in Roanoke, Virginia where she has lived since moving to America in late 2004. This photo was taken while working on a 9-month project documenting the lives of Roanoke's newest refugee population, many of whom live at the Terrace Apartments, where refugees have been placed since the Vietnam War. Shongolo escaped years of persecution and danger while living in a Kenyan refugee camp before finding safety in Roanoke. |
